Holy nostalgia bomb, a new Power Rangers movie will be hitting the big screen

We don't really cover a whole lot of movie or TV news here anymore, but no force can stop me from posting about the newly announced Power Rangers movie.

What?!

Yeah, you heard right. Put on those nostalgia glasses and transport back to a time when Power Ranger toys lined your living room floor, and you wanted nothing more than to be the Green or White Ranger. Let's be honest, Tommy was, and always will be, the coolest.

The new Power Rangers movie announcement doesn't go into specifics like story, and I'm quite interested whether this will be another original American produced movie, or whether Saban will use footage from the dozens of Super Sentai (Power Rangers in Japan) movies released over the years. However, the press release does state that it plans to re-invision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which points to the movie utilizing the original suits we've grown to love since our childhood.

Saban will be partnering with Lionsgate for the release, and since Power Rangers currently air on Nickelodeon, it will most likely be a Nick production as well.

Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level," said Power Rangers creator Haim Saban, in a statement. "They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we're confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own.

We're thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximize the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognized franchise," said Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer. "The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever. We have the ideal partner and the perfect brand with which to create a motion picture event that will resonate with moviegoers around the world for years to come.

Personally, as cheesy as the American suits were with all their leather padding, I'm hoping for a completely American produced movie with a stellar budget. That's something I felt was always lacking from the original movie as well as its sequel, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. With today's effects, a Power Rangers movie could appeal to a much wider audience than just kids. Guillermo Del Toro probably has a lot bigger projects on his plate, but after the amazing Pacific Rim, I'd love to see what he could do with the Power Rangers franchise.
