Bungie is currently giving a rundown of all the new features coming in Year Two of Destiny, starting with next month's expansion, The Taken King.
As we previously learned, The Taken King will be ditching Destiny's annoyingly complex Light system in favor of a more traditional experience leveling system. Light levels will still exist, providing a boost to your character's overall level, but won't have an impact on your overall character level. Instead, it will exist in more of a World of Warcraft Gear Score kind of way — determining if you are properly equipped to handle a specific quest, strike, or raid.
So the big question with the switch is how your Light Level will translate to your new character level in The Taken King.
"Your Light Level is being brought in and grandfathered in as your character level," Bungie revealed. "Any character from Year One, when you first log in to 2.0, will be grandfathered in and basically be boosted to your level that you always have been all through the last year."
What that level will be during the initial switch is determined by a behind-the-scenes algorithm that will take into account all of the gear you have across all your characters (not just the gear you have equipped at the time of the switch) and will determine an appropriate level. There's no need to log in last minute and make sure you have your best items equipped.
So there's literally nothing you have to do except make sure you keep all your items until September 15th when The Taken King releases so that you can maximize your character level.
