Last week, Activision and Infinity Ward revealed Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer, highlighting several new features including dynamic maps, character customization (and squad customization), new kill streaks, a revamped perk system, and new multiplayer modes. The big draw seemed to be Squads, a new mode that introduces both competitive and co-op matches against other players' squads. Here at GameZone we had mixed reactions to the changes coming to Call of Duty: Ghosts, but how did the overall public feel about it?
The thing about reveals is you can get an overall sense of consumer reaction directly from social media feedback. Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube can all provide valuable insight into consumer reaction to a product. Thanks to social media research firm Fizziology, they are able to analyze this reaction, turning these social platforms into valuable tools that can help a company gauge their target audience.
Fizziology found that Twitter volume for Call of Duty: Ghosts had jumped 1,204% following the multiplayer reveal, a clear indication that fans are interested in the game despite pre-orders being well below the norm. The finding also backs Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg's beliefs that the lower-than-usual pre-orders are due hesitation as a result of the console transition to Xbox One and PS4.
Of the 111,236 tweets analyzed, Fizziology found that 65% of conversation was positive. Comparitively, only 4% was negative, while 28% was "neutral." 75% of the negative reaction were "people mad at newly announced features."
While Squads is considered to be a major feature in this year's installment, it was actually the introduction of female soldiers that drove the conversation. In just 48 hours, the conversation regarding female soldiers in Call of Duty: Ghosts drove 4,369 Tweets. I knew it would be a huge leap for the franchise, but there was clearly more desire to play as a female soldier than anticipated.
Were you impressed with the Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer reveal?
