Sony has provided the details on how to upgrade select PlayStation 3 games to their PS4 version. While we've offered numerous posts on the subject, Sony has provided — once and for all — a simplistic way to upgrade any of the following games: Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch Dogs, and Battlefield 4 for the discounted price of $9.99.
When you buy the retail or digital version of any of the aforementioned games, you'll receive an entitlement to download the PS4 digital copy of the same game from the PlayStation Store when it becomes available — again, for $9.99.
In physical retail purchases, you'll find the code packed into the case of the PS3 version that you can redeem. To play the PS4 version you'll need to insert the original PS3 disc into your PS4 to activate and play the PS4 version, so make sure you hang onto that disc, Sony warns.
If you opt for the digital version of any of the games, you won't need to redeem the code. You'll simply look for the PS4 version on the PlayStation Store and it'll appear at the discounted price. All you'll have to do is purchase it, no code necessary.
Sony also noted that upgrading the PS3 disc version of the games do not require a PS4 system code, so you are free to redeem them as soon as you pick up your PS3 copy; you'll be able to download the digital copy when the PS4 arrives. The program lasts for a "limited time," and depending on the game you have until the following dates to redeem your code:
- January 31, 2014: Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag
- January 31, 2014: Watch Dogs
- March 28, 2014: Battlefield 4
- March 31, 2014: Call of Duty: Ghosts
