Hugh Jackman details cut Sabretooth scene from Logan

In 2009, X-Men fans were treated to a movie called X-Men Origins: Wolverine… and by treated I mean they were subjected to an utter abomination. The movie was really bad and there are very few people who actually enjoy it. The special effects were bad, the story was bad, and it totally butchered characters like Deadpool. The one saving grace of the movie was the acting from Hugh Jackman, Liev Schrieber, and to an extent, Ryan Reynolds (for the 5-10 minutes he's actually on screen).

Schrieber played the classic Wolverine villain, Sabretooth, who is also the brother of Wolverine. The chemistry between Schrieber and Jackman was excellent and there was truly a lot of potential for the character in the X-Men series. Sadly, we never saw him again and probably never will but he was once considered for Logan.

Speaking to Collider for the upcoming Blu-ray release of Logan, Hugh Jackman detailed Sabretooth's role in the film and alludes to an alternate original script for X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

“Jim and I did talk about it. For my money, he was the best thing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I thought Ryan made a lot out of his bit for it. I was always like ‘That would be so cool’ and the original script for X-Men Origins was a much smaller movie. We were sort of toying with the idea, in a way, of what we ended up doing with Logan—it was going to be a movie about these two brothers. Then different circumstances came in and the movie all of a sudden became twice the size, we had a big release date, and it was all of that. So that never happened, and I had harbored that all along and of course Jim and I worked with Liev on Kate & Leopold, so we did talk about it it was just ‘How the hell do we do it?’”

Then Jackman remembered how they were going to work him into the movie.

“Oh no there was a script stage. There was a story point where they go to Vegas, you know how they go to the Oklahoma casino? They go there and at this point Sabretooth is running like a major casino and really, really wealthy, and really kind of runs a town, and sort of respectable in a way but is still himself. That idea was thrown around, I forgot about that.”

It does sound slightly forced that this casino they stay at also happens to be owned by Sabretooth and it may have detracted from the intimacy of the film by including a cameo from other characters. Surely they could've worked his role in somehow but it makes sense why they ultimately decided against it.

Sabretooth isn't completely absent from the movie, though. In a deleted scene, Wolverine talks to a young boy about his brother and the events of Origins.

Logan releases on Blu-ray and DVD on May 23rd.
