Hugh Jackman talks Xavier and not starting without a perfect script

Hugh Jackman has been Wolverine for 15 years. A decade and a half. Let that sink in. For a franchise with plenty of things to inspire hotly debated internet minutiae and fandom infighting, the Fox X-Men movies had a couple of really inspired casting choices along the way, Jackman included. However, the end is coming with his final run with Wolverine 3.

Jackman recently spoke with Collider about his ambitions for the character stating, “I’ll be really honest with you, the actual script in its full form we’re up to about Page 60. Obviously there’s a treatment, so it’s not fully done yet, we’re not fully there. Patrick does figure in it that’s for sure. I think it’s a really important relationship but I want to see signs of that quasi-father/son sort of relationship that has not been seen before, and sides of particularly Professor X that have not been seen before. So we have some really, really cool ideas.”

The dynamic between Logan and Charles has always added an interesting layer to the narrative and serves a higher purpose of illustrating just how varying the fallout and successes of Xavier’s mentorship of mutants can be and while the prospect of seeing more of this is definitely something to be interested in, Jackman cautions, “I’m saying ‘but’ and I’m sounding a little cagey because this is the last time I’m playing him, and I have just made the commitment to myself, really, and told everyone that until that script is perfect, until it is that perfect way to sign out, I’m not gonna start shooting.”
