IGN to pick up the slack of E3 No-Show with “Summer of Gaming”

Major gaming website IGN has announced an event for this summer aptly called “Summer of Gaming”. The event is aiming to bring the newest demos, videos, and interviews for some of the most-anticipated upcoming games.

The Coronavirus pandemic has thoroughly clawed its grip across the entire world. There’s pretty much no aspect of life that is not getting impacted by the necessary precautions and countermeasures. Large portions of the populace are staying indoors and spending their time with things they can do there.

IGN will be collaborating with a number of partners for the Summer of Gaming, including 2K, Square Enix, SEGA, Bandai Namco, Amazon, Google Stadia, Twitter, Devolver Digital, THQ Nordic, and more. Expect more details in the coming weeks. The event will include live broadcasts and on-demand programming featuring IGN’s editorial coverage of the work of game developers from around the world.

While gaming might seem like one of the least things to be affected by the pandemic, the reality is that companies work across the globe. This led to several games being delayed. Most recently, Sony had to postpone The Last of Us 2 indefinitely. A major hit to the PS4’s line-up. There’s little doubt that other games will likely end up being delayed as well.

In the end, the ESA even cancelled this year’s E3 entirely, leaving numerous game announcement and news without a major event to be presented in. IGN has now decided to step in and create their own digital even with “Summer of Gaming”. Starting in early June, IGN will feature a suite of programming together with many publishers and developers where they can talk and show their games.

It’s a welcome event for gamers who are currently bored out of their minds at home and are hit doubly with the delay of anticipated releases. Whether IGN’s “Summer of Gaming” will fully be able to replace E3 remains to be seen, but it looks like major platform holders and publishers are working on creating their very own digital events. Stay tuned for more coverage about this very interesting summer in gaming history.
