Immersive augmented reality Star Wars teased in ILMxLab video

There's an incredible amount of potential in this.

Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), alongside its parent company Lucasfilm, Ltd., has announced the formation of ILM Experience Lab (ILMxLAB). This new division will take Lucasfilm, ILM, and Skywalker Sound and mix them together to create and expand the Star Wars universe "on a scale that has never been seen before."

"What we're aiming for is to open the two-dimensional world of the movies and allow fans to walk into those worlds with the same visual fidelity," said John Gaeta, ILMxLab's creative director to USA Today. "All that George begat caused a reassessment of innovation from movies to video games. The next 40 years of ILM is about exploding that universe with tech once again. xLab is as attuned to Silicon Valley as it is to Hollywood."

ILMxLab has been working to deliver an interactive world that responds in real-time. The ILMxLAb Launch video shows off a ton of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality elements with the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive VR and even iPads.

The video suggests the development of entire immersive experiences in a number of environments; Star Wars, Jurassic ages and more. There's even talk of "immersive cinema" in the video. Check it out and get excited!
