Inafune on Mighty No. 9: ‘It’s better than nothing’

You know it's bad when a game's creator lacks confidence in the final product. Sadly, Mighty No. 9 is going to be remembered for being a Kickstarter failure more so than anything else, and while the review scores to this point aren't labeling it as necessarily the worst thing ever, it's certainly not the game that was depicted in the early screenshots.

Developer Comcept recently ran a livestream to commemorate the game's launch, and the game's legendary creator, Keiji Inafune made an appearance and gave a very frank evaluation of the game's development and end result, translated by the company's Ben Judd.

“So, for now, this is what you see and what you get, for the Mighty No. 9 world. But, again, we can hope that if things go well, there'll be sequels. Because I'll tell you what, I'm not getting my 2D side-scrolling fill. And at the end of the day, even if it's not perfect, it's better than nothing. At least, that's my opinion."

What's a little disconcerting is that Judd later details how Inafune started working on other projects around the time that the game was 70% complete. Whatever your opinion on Inafune, it's safe to say that Mighty No. 9 is not the Mega Man successor we wanted and is yet one more reason to approach even the best looking Kickstarter campaigns with caution.
