Independence Day: Resurgence director gives us a hint about the story

Yes, it's about aliens.

In 1996 aliens attacked the Earth and the world relied on Will Smith and Jeff Goldbloom to make sure the aliens were dealt with. Smith and Goldbloom got the job done, but the fear of the aliens return hung over the world (almost like a huge alien ship would) — I'm talking about Independence Day.

The civilians of Earth's world's worst fear have come to fruition – the aliens are back with Independence Day: Resurgence. The sequel to Independence Day takes place after the events of the original with Goldbloom making a return, along with newbies like  Liam Hemsworth and Sela Ward.

Director Rolan Emmerich is taking the helm of Resurgence (he directed the original film too) and has finally come out to offer us a bit of insight on the film:

“Well, it’s only like one of the [alien] hives, like kind of moving around. [Laughs] What we did this time, we tried to expand the universe, too. It’s not as simple as the last one because you cannot make it as simple as the last one. Also it’s a little bit about what happened to our world when you know that they are coming back. We had 20 years to come together as a planet and to build incredible things to have a little more even fight.”

Unfortunately, Emmerich's insight is a rewording the films synopsis – with the addition of an expanded universe. Check out the original synopsis below:

Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Either way, we are gearing up for a huge human vs. alien battle – which is exciting! Independence Day: Resurgence is set to release on June 24, 2016.
