After much speculation, 20th Century Fox is finally announcing the title to the long-anticipated sequel to Independence Day, and it's called "Independence Day: Resurgence." A teaser trailer was also released. Check it out above.
The title sounds pretty straightforward enough, but the "resurgence" moniker gives us a sense that the alien-threat Earth thought it eradicated many years ago is likely coming back fast and hard looking for revenge.
With production well underway, we've been hit with some ID4 news in recent months, including a poster reveal and some in-set photos featuring everyone's favorite "Must go faster" actor Jeff Goldblum on set reprising his role as scientist David Levinson.
Independence Day: Resurgence stars: Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward. A brief synopsis was also released:
We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
Make sure to bring your popcorn and alien-missile viruses June 24th, 2016 when Independence Day: Resurgence is slated for release.
Frankly, we're just pumped to see how President Whitmore will be able to top his awesome rally speech from the first film.
