Indie devs concerned but hopeful about Steam Greenlight

Steam Greenlight is happening on August 30, but what do indie developers think about Valve's new community method of selecting games?

Speaking to GamesBeat, Dejobaan Games’ Ichiro Lambe — one of roughly a dozen hand-picked developers that Valve invited to their office in Bellevue, Washington, to provide feedback — said that the program could "help highlight the hidden gems that might otherwise fall through the cracks.”

Designer Robert Boyd of Zeboyd Games, who worked on the recently released Penny Arcade title, said, "I think it’s a great idea in theory. However, I hope that Steam has some safeguards in place against developers boosting their Steam Greenlight ratings via dubious means.”

Valve promises that they'll have systems put in place to deal with people who try to abuse Greenlight, and these defenses will evolve over time. "But we’re also going to be careful not to erect hurdles for legitimate users," a spokesman said.
