Infinity Ward promises no Loot Boxes or Supply Drops in Modern Warfare

Great news for every gamer who is looking forward to the reboot of the modern military shooter franchise. A director at Infinity Ward has openly clarified that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will not have any Loot Box or Supply Drop system. A very welcome, yet bold claim when one considers how the CoD franchise has been one of the major targets of offering the widely-despised luck-based mechanic.

Loot Boxes ,or Supply Drops as they are called in the Call of Duty games, have been a heated topic among gamers and at the core of controversies ever since they started to appear regularly in AAA games. The system prominently made its rise in mobile games where they have pretty much become a standard among many Free-to-Play games. But the profits and thus allure was simply so big that more and more publishers have adopted to include them into regular-priced console/PC games. This obviously didn’t go all-too-well, and we have witnessed many games since they regularly come together with real money purchases.

Activision’s previous Call of Duty game Black Ops 4 became a huge success by offering a battle royale mode for the first time. But the sentiment among its players quickly turned against it when the game received more and more predatory microtransactions in form of paid Loot Boxes.

Naturally, expectations among CoD fans were that this trend would continue with the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot. Infinity Ward Art Director Joel Emslie today felt the need to address these fears by flat-out discarding them.

Sigh. There continues to be misinformed and incorrect info being pushed about Modern Warfare. What I can say right now is that we are definitely NOT working on any kind of supply drop or loot box system. Also, functional stuff is unlocked through GAMEPLAY. Stay tuned, we’re planning to release info this week. – Infinity Ward

That’s great news but cynical readers might think that while at the moment there are no Loot Boxes, they very well might be introduced post-launch. Just as it was the case with Black Ops 4. Time will tell ultimately how Lot Box-free Modern Warfare will remain over its lifecycle.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is coming out October 25th for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
