Injustice 2 in-game currency ‘Source Crystals’ announced; Purchased with real money

Netherrealm announced a new microtransaction currency today for Injustice 2 in the form of Source Crystals. They will be purchased using real cash, but will only be used on cosmetic items in three areas.

Allowing visual changes on items and characters, the three things you will be able to purchase with Source Crystals are

  1. Shaders – change the color of your character, like making Harley Quinn pink and blue rather than green and yellow
  2. Skins – Your Hal Jordan Green Lantern can now be John Steward in looks and voice, but the moveset remains the same
  3. Gear Transform – make one item look like another. This is good for making higher level items look more like the cooler, weaker items

You will also be able to insta-boost a character up to level 20, but with one exception. This can only be done after you level at least one character to level 20 normally, so as to not mess up or cheat your in game progression.  This functions similar to Destiny and its silver currency, and won't serve as a pay to win.

The good thing about cosmetic upgrades like these is that it gives no advantage to those who purchase them. After all, if you want to spend $10 to make Harley Quinn blue and not pink, then go ahead get down. It's also good to see more and more developers taking this route with optional DLC and microtransactions, such as Ubisoft.

For now, we'll have to wait until May 16th for Injustice 2 to launch on Xbox One, PS4, and PC
