Injustice: Gods Among Us offers a ‘deep, elaborate’ story and a twist on Superman!?

Injustice: Gods Among Us turned a lot of heads when it was first revealed a few weeks ago. Developed by NetherRealm Studios, the creators of Mortal Kombat, Injustice: Gods Among Us looks to offer that similar gritty, darker experience. While we've experienced this darker tone in the Mortal Kombat franchise, it's something we're not used to seeing with DC super heroes.

And I think that is what intrigues people with Injustice: Gods Among Us. But while we're starting to see more of the brutal gameplay featured, we still don't really know much about the story mode and campaign.

"With every game we do, there are things that worked and things that didn’t," explained creative director Ed Boon to PS Blog. "In Mortal Kombat, the Story mode just worked. We didn’t promote the story leading into launch and it ended up surprising people."

"So we want to continue that tradition and offer a deep, elaborate story experience in Injustice. And with these [DC] characters, who have decades of history behind them, there’s a ton of stuff to draw from," he added. "We can’t wait for people to see the Story mode in this game."

One of the big focal points in the game is blurred lines between good and evil. Does that mean heroes we normally view as "good" will have a twist to them? As the Sony noted in the interview, the Superman in Injustice isn't the one we're used to seeing.

"Our Superman isn’t quite the same Superman that you grew up with," Boon teased. "We definitely want to give a more contemporary, NetherRealms spin to the character, and he plays a big part in the story. People will definitely be surprised by this rendition of Superman."

"There are definitely dimensions that we’re adding to our twist on Superman," he furthered. "There are a lot of interpretations that have happened over the years, and we are definitely giving a more complex Superman for this game."

Boon stopped there with his discussions of story and characters, but did say more details will be revealed at PAX, Gamescom, and other future events. As Superman is one of my favorite super heroes I'm anxious, and a bit worried, to see what they have planned with his story. With that being said, it definitely sounds intriguing and I can't wait to see the characters painted in a different light.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is set to release in 2013 for Xbox 360, PS3, and the Wii U. Fans attending San Diego Comic-Con can get a chance to play the game at DC Entertainment's booth (#1915).
