Insomniac says it wants the world of Fuse to be taken seriously

Remember when Fuse was first unveiled as Overstrike? The game looked like it would be rife with action and humor, two elements that have certainly proven to go together quite swimmingly. Developer Insomniac then revealed that the game was receiving a bit of a makeover, focusing less on colorful worlds and comedy and more on realistic themes.

The reaction across the internet wasn't all that favorable, and fans voiced their disdain toward the new direction and publisher EA's speculated influence immediately. Insomniac has given some details about the new style in Fuse, saying that players will still encounter plenty of over-the-top environments and weapons. That said, the studio wants the game's world and lore to be taken seriously.

"We have our underwater bases," said Insomniac Creative Director Brian Allgeier in a statement to Joystiq at this year's New York Comic Con. "We've got missiles and volcanoes. We have a lot of exotic situations but at the same time we want people to take the universe seriously."

As a fan of the overly fantastical and absurd, it actually saddens me a bit that Insomniac changed the direction of the game so drastically. That said, the developer is known for its creative approach to weapon design, and with the inclusion of warp rifles and freeze guns, I'm still pretty excited to see some unique options for disposing of enemies.

Fuse is due out on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sometime next year.
