inXile becomes first company to crowdfund a second game on Kickstarter, Torment: Tides of Numenera

UPDATE! Torment: Tides of Numenera has been successfully funded in just a few hours and has now surpassed its goal, with 30 more days to go.

Brian Fargo, was amongst a few lucky people who successfully crowdfunded, and surpassed their goal on Kickstarter for Wasteland 2. Before its successful funding, we even got a chance to talk with Brian about Wasteland 2. By the end of its run, Wasteland 2 managed to raise a whopping $3 million, which has essentially tripled its goal.

The team at inXile hopes to replicate this crazy success with a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment, an absolutely amazing RPG, that for anyone familiar with it, will undoubtedly remember it being one of their favorite RPGs of all time.

In Torment: Tides of Numenera, players will have to decide for themselves the answer to the eternal question, what does one life matter? Numenera's Ninth World is a fantastic vision of a world in which massive civilizations continue to rise and fall with only cities, monuments, and artifacts left behind to serve as reminders of their past existence. These reminders have become part of the accumulated detritus of eons and now this assortment of ancient power, called the numenera, is there for the taking. One of these humans has discovered a way to harness the numenera to grow strong, to cheat death, to skip across the face of centuries in a succession of bodies. But he discovers an unexpected side effect: You.

You have to hand it to the guys at inXile and Brian Fargo for jumping into the world of self publishing so fiercely. With writing on Wasteland 2 done, the same team can continue to work on Torment (given that the Kickstarter successfully funds) without the fear of layoffs or wait a long time until the next project.

Things aren't always so great on Kickstarter though. Project Awakened, which we were very excited for, unfortunately saw its demise on Kickstarter, falling short of just under $200,000. That's not to say that the project couldn't survive off of $338,000 however Kickstarter won't actually fund the money unless the full amount is raised.

If inXile's Kickstarter is successful once again, inXile will be the first studio that will be developing a second game through crowdfunding, which will no doubt spawn many other studios to follow suit.
