It looks like Assassin’s Creed: Origins has Loot Boxes

This year gamers have adopted two new trigger words, Loot Box. For better or worse, they appear to be a staple of games going forward, and while some games, like Overwatch, who is a big reason why Loot Boxes have taken off in 2017, keep the item drops to cosmetics, which by and large is fine for most. However, other games, like Battlefront 2 have given gamers cause to pause, and now it appears as though another, Assassin's Creed: Origins will have them as well.

A NeoGAF user spotted what looks to be a Loot Box feature in a recent Gameplay video from YouTuber Centerstrain01. In it, Bayek visits a merchant named Reda whose stock "changes weekly" according to the in-game description. Upon accessing the option Reda has for sale, the demo features "Legendary Crafting Materials" and a chest that "contains one random weapon or shield." Centerstrain emphasizes in the video that these things are optional, which would seem to indicate that these are Origins' version of Loot Boxes.

Here's a screenshot (courtesy of NeoGAF):

Reda's stock is purchasable through in-game currency, which can be obtained by normal means. But given Ubisoft's history of having microtransactions in Unity and Syndicate, it makes sense that they would be in Origins as well. It remains to be seen just how much these things will affect gameplay, but we will find out when Assassin's Creed: Origins releases on October 27th, 2017.
