Who are Rey's parents? It's been a question since The Force Awakens released and fans have been wondering who they are. Director J.J. Abrams spoke about this very topic at the Tribeca film festival yesterday and provided some insightful news.
During a Q&A with some fans, Abrams answered this very questioning by saying
"Rey's parents are not in Episode VII. So I can't possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too."
Some fans have speculated that Rey may be Luke's daughter or even Han and Leia's. The only issue is that this doesn't make any sense to the movie. If she was Rey Solo, the interaction between the characters would have been totally different. Also, why make them act like total strangers the entire movie? If she was Rey Skywalker, the story wouldn't jive either as characters like Han, Leia, Chewbacca, C3PO, etc would all know who she was.
Abrams also clarified by saying that “What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world.” This statement leaves open to ambiguity the fact that she may in fact be Rey Kenobi. After all, Obi-Wan technically wasn't in Episode VII. We only heard his voice in the flashback scene. As of now, my money is on something totally new that hasn't been thought of yet. I still believe she was hid away after Kylo Ren killed all of Luke's others students, which is why he obviously knows who she is in the film, but her origins will explain why.
