James Cameron has revealed what the Avatar sequels will be about

James Cameron has made it clear that Avatar will be seeing much more than the initially planned trilogy. In fact,  Cameron and his team are planning to release Avatar 2 in December 2018, followed by three more sequels in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

There will be a total of four Avatar sequels. It's clear that Cameron "overwrote" the sequels, but what story was so big that it had to be extended into four sequels? Well, Cameron has finally bestowed us with the reasoning behind the four sequels.

This is what the coming Avatar movies will be about:

"The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children. It’s more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans"

Cameron revealed this tidbit to Variety during an interview but didn't say much else. The first Avatar was pretty much Pocahontas in space with aliens, it's unclear how the rest of the movies will pan out. However, judging from Cameron's quote we will probably be seeing Jake and Neytiri die and their offspring picking up the struggles with humans.

The first of the sequels is set to release around Christmas 2018 (it was originally planned to release in 2014), but the date could move.

“We haven’t moved that target yet, but we will if we need to. The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it’s an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we’re able to fulfill on that promise.”

As for now, you can expect Avatar 2 in 2018, with the following sequels releasing 2020, 2021 and 2022.
