James Cameron has made it clear that we are getting much more than the initially planned trilogy for Avatar. In December 2018 we are getting Avatar 2, which will be followed by three more sequels in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Cameron admitted to having overwritten the sequels, but he says that it's because that's the best way to show the 'family saga' that will be shown off in the following movies. When Avatar first released back in 2009 it was a huge hit in 3D and Cameron wants to make sure we get to experience the sequels in an even bigger way.
While accepting honorary membership into the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, Cameron detailed that he intended on getting even better 3D visual out there. He even thinks we can make it happen without the 3D glasses.
“I’m going to push. Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range (HDR) and high frame rates (HFR) — the things we are working toward,” said Cameron (via IndieWire). “I’m still very bullish on 3D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen — with no glasses. We’ll get there.”
The question is, will Cameron delay his Avatar movies so they can have awesome 3D?
