Lollipop Chainsaw has quickly become an action game to watch out for, whether you're a fan of producer Suda51's work or just dig really crazy games. In a recent interview with Destructoid, writer James Gunn (who also brought us Dawn of the Dead in 2004 and Slither), talked about his involvement with Lollipop Chainsaw. It turns out Gunn was a pretty busy guy, writing almost the entire script by himself.
Gunn made several comparisons to his film writing career, stating that writing a video game was actually very freeing. "The amount of it–the mass of it–was very freeing to me. To be able to create this whole world. And also, it's freeing because you're not stuck, like, in a screenplay to be stuck in this, like, very strict, moving forward plot. You're able to go in all these different directions and have fun in a lot of different ways. I loved it."
As far as gameplay is concerned, Gunn stated that he really had no input, opting to leave that area entirely to Suda51. He did, however, help decide if certain sequences and characters looked "right" in different scenes. Being the film expert that he is, it's obvious that Gunn was probably able to contribute a lot to the cinematic side of Lollipop Chainsaw.
The writer went on to say that he had a lot of fun working on the latest Grasshopper Manufacture title, and that he and Suda51 really did whatever the heck they wanted with it, which is great because it's always good knowing that game makers are putting everything they have on the table for a project. Gunn ended the interview by saying that he loved working on Lollipop Chainsaw, and that he really hopes to work on another game in the future, which is certainly worth getting pretty excited over.
Also, Gunn said Roger Ebert was a d*ck for saying video games aren't art. Good stuff!
