The DC movies have had their struggles to be sure. There has been no shortage of divisive opinions on Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad, but the one thing Warner Brothers seems to want more than anything else is to erase the divide.
One of the ways they could potentially accomplish this is by changing up the tone for each superhero movie (something Marvel is known for doing with Thor and Ant-Man). Aquaman Director James Wan recently revealed that he is making Aquaman into a high-seas "swashbuckling action-adventure" film.
He said:
"I kind of don't want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I'm going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story.
It's ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone."
Adventure is likely the key term here, as Man of Steel, BvS, and Suicide Squad have been predominantly action movies. High seas films have a tendency to focus on themes like the hero's quest and discovery, so it's entirely possible that Aquaman might be looking for something. Pirate treasure, perhaps? Probably not.
But Raiders of the Lost Ark is as good a starting point as any for inspiration on a hero that talks to fish.
