Since 1954, the Toho studio in Japan has produced 28 Godzilla films and has licensed the rights to Warner Bros. since around 2004. As a response to the 2014 Godzilla from Warner Bros. (and before they release the sequel in 2018), Toho is looking to bring Godzilla back to Japan.
Who will be steering the film? Neon Genesis Evangelion's Hideaki Anno and Attack on Titan's Shinji Haguchi will co-direct Godzilla 2016 (the Japanese Godzilla). Both directors will be playing a double role in the films production; Anno will be writing the film's script, while Higuchi oversees special effects.
This will be the first film since 2004 that Japan has produced a Godzilla film and is beginning production this summer, it should be released in the United States in 2016.
“Ever since Hollywood announced that ‘Godzilla’ was to be resurrected, the expectation for another Japanese Godzilla grew. And if we were to newly produce, we looked into Japanese creators who were the most knowledgeable and who had the most passion for Godzilla,” Toho said to Variety.
