Jeremy Renner wanted to kill off Hawkeye during The Avengers

The Avengers was one of the biggest movies of 2012 with an all-star cast. Almost everyone in the film got a chance to shine, everyone except for the brain dead Hawkeye played by Jeremy Renner. The character that already gets a lot of crap thrown his way for being a guy that just shoots arrows at aliens and other super powered beings was wasted in The Avengers when he was hypnotized by Loki at the very start of the film.

Turns out fans weren't the only ones who disliked this story choice. Renner recently spoke at a Q & A in London where he expressed his frustration and even revealed some interesting information about how he tried to kill the character entirely.

“[I]n the first Avengers…I was just getting to know who Hawkeye was, and then zap, I go round like a zombie, I’m like Loki’s minion, And I’m still not even sure who Hawkeye was at that point. So I’m a little frustrated, because I was so excited to figure out who Hawkeye was.”

So, how did he vent his frustrations with his character being a minion? He pretended to die in every scene he could:

“just had a heart attack in every scene – I’d just be walking with…Scarlett Johansson, and just like be 'ugh.' And they said, ‘What are you doing man?’

Apparently, he was just giving filmakers the option to get rid of him altogether for how lame it was.

"I’m giving you an option, if you just want to kick me out of this movie. Just you know, at any given moment, if you wanna kill me off, daddy’s gonna be having a heart attack.’”

Of course, these days Renner doesn't quite feel the same:

“I don’t really want him to die now,. I really got to explore him a lot, and I can’t wait to explore him more, and there’s some really cool ideas coming up. Really cool ideas. Great deaths! Amazing ways to die.”

Renner is expected to return in the next outing for the Avengers in 2019's Avengers: Infinity War.
