JJ Abrams says he's done making reboots. Last night at the Golden Globes, he expressed his gratitude for having worked on projects like Star Trek and Westworld but he would rather pursue original concepts.
In an interview with People, Abrams said:
"You know, I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten involved in things that I loved when I was a kid. In fact, even Westworld, which we're [here at the Golden Globes] for tonight, is one of them. But I don't feel any desire to do that again. I feel like I've done enough of that, that I'm more excited about working on things that are original ideas that perhaps one day someone else will have to reboot."
In 2009, Abrams rebooted the Star Trek series, which received high acclaim, even though some criticism from original fans of the series.
“You know, I do think that if you're telling a story that is not moving anything forward, not introducing anything that’s relevant, that's not creating a new mythology or an extension of it, then a complete remake of something feels like a mistake […] You can't just be remaking something just for the sake of remaking it."
Abrams has no qualms working within existing IPs however, as long as the story being told hasn't been told before. He has stated in the past that a Portal and Half-Life movie are being worked on with Valve.
