John Romero’s new FPS, Blackroom, has its Kickstarter canceled

What it takes to make a successful Kickstarter seems to keep evolving as legendary DOOM developers John Romero and Adrian Carmack found out. Romero's new studio, Night Work Games, recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for Blackroom, a fast paced First Person Shooter that harkens back to the genre's glory days earlier this week. Unfortunately, the campaign video featured no gameplay, which raised the eyebrows of a significant number of interested parties

As such, the team canceled the campaign so that they can focus on creating a demo to showcase their vision for Blackroom.

From the official Kickstarter campaign page:

"We’re pressing “PAUSE” on the fundraising campaign for BLACKROOM to complete this gameplay demo. Simply put, this will take more time than the Kickstarter has left, so we’ve decided to suspend the campaign and launch a new one when the gameplay demo is ready."

Night Work Games plans to re-launch the Kickstarter campaign upon completion of the demo, and they have said that they will honor all current backer rewards.

Kickstarter is such a tricky thing to get right. Plenty of developers have tried and failed to deliver their games both with and without a proof of concept. This has understandably made plenty of backers uneasy about the whole process, and as such there is more of an incentive for Developers to assure their fans that they will deliver on their promise.
