One of the most iconic composers of all-time is returning to one of the biggest franchises to ever exist to compose a theme for a certain space smuggler. Speaking to Variety, Jaws and Star Wars composer John Williams revealed he is returning to compose a theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story.
The famed musician will not be doing the entire score, something he only does for the mainline entries in the Star Wars saga, but he will do the theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story like he has done for the other spin-offs.
“The present plan is that I’m writing a theme for Han Solo, and John Powell is going to write the score, which he’ll do brilliantly,” Williams says.
Powell was announced to be doing the score in July, his track record includes various animated films such as Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon, the Bourne franchise, X-Men: The Last Stand and other high profile films. Powell garnered an Oscar nomination for his score on How to Train Your Dragon.
“His assignment is something I’m very happy about,” Williams adds. “What I will do is offer this to John, and to [director] Ron Howard, and if all parties are happy with it, then I will be happy. … John [Powell] will complete the score. He will write all the rest of the themes and all of the other material, which I’m going to be very anxious to hear.”
It has been noted that Powell’s score will retain the style of the original Star Wars music but will still feel his distinctive voice.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is due out on May 25th, 2018 and the first trailer is rumored to be dropping in the next two to three weeks. Earlier this week, a piece of promotional material featuring official assets from the film leaked online showing Lando, Han, Chewie, and Emilia Clarke’s character, Kira.
