It's official — instead of starring in Guardians of the Galaxy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on to join Robert Rodriguez's comic book sequel movie Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Gordon-Levitt will be playing a character named Johnny, a cocky gambler that has a grudge against a sworn enemy. He joins a cast that includes Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Clive Owen and Rosario Dawson, but Gordon-Levitt's part is one of the roles that binds together the film's multiple story strands.
It's worth noting that the character of Johnny was originally written for Johnny Depp. Joseph Gordon-Levitt said of him joining the film, "I love how the first movie uses VFX, not to make fake things look real, but to create a heightened world unburdened by the look and feel of reality. Plus, nobody makes a badass like Mr. Rodriguez."
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For opens on October 4, 2013.
