Jurassic World a ‘direct sequel’ to Jurassic Park, according to director

God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs. Man also creates The Lost World and Jurassic Park III. 14 years later, Universal Pictures kills both of those films, and Chris Pratt, his pack of dinosaurs, and Jurassic World inherits the Earth.

Okay, so The Lost World and Jurassic Park III aren't totally being written out of the franchise's continuity, according to Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow (speaking to Yahoo! Movies), but he did say that the upcoming film will act as a direct sequel to the original 1993 film Jurassic Park. It's set "some 20 years after the events" of the first film, and takes place on the island of Isla Nubar where a functioning theme park based around dinosaurs has been constructed.

Although there have been subtle nods to the first film (remember that initial teaser with the iconic Jurassic Park theme played in slow piano?), this is the first we're hearing that Jurassic World will actually be considered a direct sequel.

According to Yahoo's report, there are other references to Spielberg's film, like in the background of the laboratory you can see a set of pipes that were part a Jurassic Park set. You might have even recognized that B.D. Wong is reprising his role as geneticist Dr. Henry Wu. In fact, I'm pretty sure he's the main man responsible for the creation of Indominus Rex. Of course, there's also the quick clip in the trailer in which Indominus Rex busts through the glass of a vehicle to get to two terrified chilren — a blatant nod to the original film in which the T-Rex does the exact same thing to Tim and Lex Murphy.

Point being, there's a lot of similarities between Jurassic World and Jurassic Park and it's not just to play off of our nostalgia. It all makes sense now, but I don't know why Universal Pictures didn't just come out and say this though.
