Jurassic World Review Roundup: Best Jurassic Park sequel yet?

Action movies are back and stronger than ever (were they ever out?)! There have been plenty of action films out recently, some of which are picking up and rebooting older film series' like Mad Max: Fury Road and Jurassic World.

There have been plenty of Jurassic Park sequels, but when the film takes over the World something magical happens. Reviewers have spoken and it looks as though Jurassic World is the best sequel to the original Jurassic Park that has released.

The film starts off somewhat satirically, opening characters mention that 'no one likes dinosaurs anymore' and they need to be bigger and better than ever, in order for people to like it. This is what the film delivers and despite what people disliked, they had more to like.

The film has received scores anywhere from 6/10 to B+ (out of A – D). Here's a roundup of reviews:

While the new Jurassic World pales next to the awe-inspiring spectacle of the original, it’s easily the franchise’s most thrilling sequel yet…Jurassic World is a blockbuster of its moment. It’s not deep. There aren’t new lessons to be learned. And the film’s flesh-and-blood actors are basically glamorized extras. But when it comes to serving up a smorgasbord of bloody dino mayhem, it accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do beautifully.

Variety:

Jurassic World” starts out as a satire of bigger-is-better corporate groupthink only to become the very object of its scorn — a giant wind-up machine that’s all roar and precious little bite.

The dinos themselves have rarely looked better than they do under the direction of VFX supervisor Tim Alexander, especially Indominous rex (arguably the movie’s most well-developed female character), and a new underwater beastie who’s like Shamu on steroids.

Vanity Fair:

This is a movie that is forced to excavate a grand old thing, but it does so with a heartening amount of care. Sure everything’s souped-up and modernized, animals anthropomorphized into comic-book villains, but there’s still some of the original spirit lingering here…Jurassic World often feels like a long-time fan’s loving homage.

A terrifically enjoyable and exciting summer spectacular: savvy, funny, ridiculous in just the right way, with some smart imaginative twists on the idea of how dinosaurs could be repositioned in a consumer marketplace where they are almost commonplace, and how the military might take a sinister interest in weaponising these scary beasts.

Jurassic World has problems. There’s really no denying it. And yet despite those problems, whenever my mind starts thinking about the movie, I immediately want to see it again. The sense of wonder and rush of adrenaline is so powerful that – for me –  it covers all the bad and ugly things about the movie. At its very worst, it’s the best Jurassic Park sequel. At its very best, it gives you tiny glimpses at what may have been. Maybe that good will will go away as the film ages but, for now, I liked it just a little more than I didn’t.

In an age of rampant universe building, where every movie is the foundation for exponentially more, Jurassic World is a refreshing anomaly: a blockbuster that stands alone.

It has the spirit of the original movie, but doesn't simply rehash the past. It’s a different beast – a self-aware blockbuster which has plenty of heart, humour, and excitement to make it a thrilling summer attraction.

Colin Trevorrow has delivered a polished, intelligent, and crowd-pleasing would-be blockbuster.  Jurassic World accomplishes the task of being something of an original adventure within the confines of being a sequel. It has almost too many good ideas, while using the original film only when contextually appropriate. I wish the main characters were a little more refined, and I wish the film took the time to explore its subtexts beyond periodic seasoning, but that may be me wishing for a different film…For those who will come for dinosaur action and sprawling big-scale popcorn entertainment, satisfaction is in-fact guaranteed.
