The trailer for the upcoming Justice League had a very different tone from the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailers. Basically, the trailer had more humor in it than Dawn of Justice had in the entire film. This tone shift won't be limited to the trailer, though, DC Comics chief creative officer Geoff Jones has revealed the Justice League will be leaving the grittiness and darkness behind – at least to a certain extent.
“[I]n the past, I think the studio has said, ‘Oh, DC films are gritty and dark and that’s what makes them different.’ That couldn’t be more wrong,” Johns told Wall Street Journal (via io9). “It’s a hopeful and optimistic view of life. Even Batman has a glimmer of that in him. If he didn’t think he’d make tomorrow better, he’d stop.”
Jon Berg, a Warner Bros. executive, chimed in to add that reactions to Dawn of Justice “accelerated the [Justice League] story to get to the hope and optimism a little faster.”
On top of shifting the overall tone of the DCEU films, Justice League will also “directly address Batman’s extreme actions in [Batman v Superman], such as torturing criminals and nearly killing the Man of Steel, rather than accept them as par for the course.”
Basically, these two dudes are telling us that Justice League will be totally different than the movie that critics and fans absolutely tore apart (except for some people).
Personally, I like dark and gritty. Hopefully Justice League doesn't have too many quips and one-liners in it – that was what turned me off of Marvel movies.
