Justin.tv says goodbye for good

Justin.tv, which helped pioneer video livestreaming on the internet, has officially shutdown. According to a notice on the website's homepage, the website, mobile apps, and APIs are no longer in service.

For those unfamiliar with the story of Justin.tv, it was created by Justin Kan, Emmett Shear, Michael Seibel and Kyle Vogt in March 2007. It started as a single channel featuring Kan who broadcast his life through a term he coined "lifecasting." The platform then went on to allow anyone to broadcast live video content through individual user accounts, known as channels.

On June 6, 2011, Justin.tv spawned a new website dedicated to broadcasting video games. It was called Twitch. Since then, Twitch.tv has become one of the largest video platforms ever. Justin.tv was officially rebranded as Twitch Interactive Inc. in February 2014 and as a result has become the focus of the company's resources.

"Unfortunately that means we need to shut down Justin.tv. We thank all of our broadcasters and viewers for 7 years of live video memories," the company wrote on its website.

As a final goodbye to Justin.tv, co-founders Justin Kan and Emmett Shear, who is now the CEO for Twitch, posted a heartfelt video providing an overview of Justin.tv's history.

So what does this mean to you, the former Justin.tv user? Well, your account is closed and you'll be unable to access any settings or content. If you used your justin.tv account to login to Twitch, then it will still work on Twitch. Unfortunately, videos on Justin.tv are no longer accessible for download as video archiving and VODs were removed on June 15, 2014. For more information on the shutdown, check out Justin.tv's FAQs.
