Kevin Smith returns to direct another episode of ‘The Flash’ and shares his plans for ‘Arrow’

Kevin Smith will be returning to direct an episode of CW's The Flash for its third season.

Last season, Kevin Smith, director of 'Clerks' and the upcoming 'Yoga Hosers', directed one of highest rated episodes of CW's The Flash entitled 'The Good Dinosaur', which finds Barry trapped in the actual quantum realm of the Speed Force in an attempt to regain his powers. The episode was one of the most emotionally compelling stories of season two and ever since it premiered, fans have been hoping Smith would make his return to the show. In a recent interview with Den of Geek, it was revealed that he would in fact be directing episode seven for the next season.

On the topic of his involvement with the CW's DC universe, Smith has expressed his hopes to be a part of one of their other successful superhero shows, Arrow. Being a comic book writer in addition to his film and television repertoire, he is praised for his 2002 run of 'Green Arrow', which introduced a new villain to the lore, Onomatopoeia, an assassin with a penchant for audibly speaking the sound effects of his actions:

“I know I’m going back to 'The Flash', first week of September, to direct episode 7 of season 3. Still haven’t heard anything back from 'Arrow'. You know, I wish, it would be amazing because I would love to write and direct Onomatopoeia in the show. Um, but I know they’re doing – what is it? – Wild Dog this year, as well as Vigilante, so maybe they’re just like ‘we don’t need you’, or whatever. But, at the moment, anyone over there raises a flag; I’m like ‘please, let me in!’ That’d be fun as f**k.”

Despite the oddball nature of Onomatopoeia's claim-to-fame, Smith does actually have an elegant solution to successfully bring his villain to life in a way befitting to the dark tone of the show:

“Yeah, I’ve figured out a way to do it that is kinda bad-ass and also connects to comics more or less. So instead of just doing the actual sound – which to me, in the real world, would be like the dude from 'Police Academy' making noises with his mouth – he’ll just have little cards. Business cards that have typewritten words of whatever the f**k. So instead of him saying ‘blam’, you’d find this card on your desk and turn around and ‘blam’, he’d shoot you and stuff like that. Which I think is a little more chilly, you know, for doing it in live action."
