Layers of Fear 2, the unexpected sequel to 2016’s original psychological-horror hit, has gotten a brand-new trailer. Unveiled during PAX South 2019, this second look at the upcoming horror game gives a lot more clues on the setting. Check it out!
The first Layers of Fear was a positive surprise for fans of horror games as it aimed to offer a deeper experience in the genre. Rather than solely relying on the grotesque and gore, or even fill the game with cheap jump scares, Layers of Fear made great use of painting as a major narrative anchor. Similarly, Layers of Fear 2 is following these footsteps by revolving the story around another art form. This time, cinema.
As explained in greater detail in the accompanying “Inspiration” video, developer Bloober Team describes the themes and motives of their newest project as that of the Golden Age of Hollywood. This era is typically descriptive of the early to mid 1900s and is chock-full of legendary cinematography. From King Kong to Dracula, this is where legends were born.
The main character of Layers of Fear 2 is an actor during this time period who is playing the lead role in a movie set on an ocean liner. A mysterious director and an isolated location make the perfect setting for an ominous adventure. Bloober Team states that they will follow a similar style of horror as in the first game, with claustrophobic locations, shifting environments and a unique spotlight on the inner conflict of actor who isn’t sure anymore what is part of him is real and what only fiction. A great premise.
Layers of Fear 2 is set to come out sometime this year. No platforms are confirmed yet but keeping the predecessor’s track record in mind, it’s likely to come out for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
