League of Legends Wins 2011 Golden Joystick Award for Best Free-to-Play Game

League of Legends rise to popularity is unbelievable to say the least.  In what seems like an overnight boom, League of Legends has expanded worldwide and now boasts a player base of over 15 million.  For those who don't know, League of Legends pits teams of Champions against each other in a session based action RTS, winning gold for their kills.  Based off of popular Warcraft mod, Dota, League of Legends has expanded upon the relatively new MOBA genre with innovative game modes like the recently released Dominion.

Tonight, League of Legends took home the 2011 Golden Joystick Award for Best Free-to-Play game.  Riot Games was quick to thank fans for their support on their website:

"Thanks for your support, we beat out some great competition in the online space to secure our second Golden Joystick in a row!"

The competition included games like Bejeweled 3, CityVille, Runescape, Champions Online, Zuma Blitz, World of Tanks, Runes of Magic, and a few more.  This is Riot Games second Golden Joystick award in as many years.

Making good on their earlier promise, Riot celebrated their award with fans by issuing 10-win IP Boosts to every player, within the next few days.

"This award belongs to all of us, summoners!"

This just goes to show you what hard work, and dedication to creating a great game will get you.  Congratulations Riot Games.  You've earned it.
