Leonard Nimoy, Star Trek’s Spock, dies at 83

Legendary actor Leonard Nimoy, best known for his role as Spock in Star Trek, died today in his home in Los Angeles. He was 83 years old and suffering from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The onset of his ailment was triggered by years of smoking — something he had given up nearly 30 years ago.

Acting as Spock had worked well into Nimoy's life; years after the show ended he was quoted saying, "To this day, I sense Vulcan speech patterns, Vulcan social attitudes and even Vulcan patterns of logic and emotional suppression in my behavior."

Nimoy was not only an actor — he was a poet, a photographer and a musician. His reach was not limited by the Vulcan salute of "Live long and prosper," his voice even reached video games.

You can hear him as Master Xehanort in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and Birth by Sleep, as the Narrator in Civilization IV, and, of course, as Spock in several Star Trek games.

Leonard Nimoy has shaped a generation. Pieces of his art (acting, poetry, voice) can be found every where. He will be missed, but his memory will live long and prosper.

Leonard Nimoy, March 26, 1931 to February 27, 2015.
