Remember when the internet freaked out that the lightsaber shown in the first trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens had a crossguard? It's silly to get upset about that after you think about it. There's been lightsaber whips for crying out loud. If you think about it, J.J. Abrams could have done much, much worse than that lightsaber design.
For instance, he could have had that cloaked figure in the trailer using a lightsaber chainsaw. Or lightsabers that extend into little stick figures holding lightsabers that then fight. Crazy right?
