Life is Strange developer Dontnod Entertainment first revealed its next project, a vampire-themed RPG by the name of Vampyr, in mid-2015. We got a first look at the fledgling game near the end of the year, and thanks to a recent update to the game’s still-threadbare site, we have another batch of screenshots to pick apart.
The consensus is Vampyr is dark. Four lanterns per 40 square feet of cobblestone alleyway dark. Poorly illuminated sky-devouring Gothic cathedrals dark. Ominously foggy scarlet glow in a dilapidated medical bay dark. Silhouetted ruffians cavorting about in moonlight dark.
Really, really dark.
Thankfully, we do know a bit more about Vampyr beyond those incredibly informative details. The game is set in early 20th century Britain, more specifically in a rendition of the period overrun with vampires, one of which is you, the player, a devilish aberration out for blood.
“Absolutely all characters in the game are potential victims of your vampiric lust,” Dontnod said in 2015. “Carefully study the habits of your next victim, his or her relationships with other characters, and set up your strategy to feed, unnoticed: seduce them, change their daily habits, or make sure they end up alone in a dark street.”
True to form, Dontnod is pushing player choice and control of Vampyr’s story, but unlike Life is Strange, the game will also include fast-paced combat complete with vampire powers. There’s even a crafting system.
Vampyr will release on PS4, Xbox One and PC in 2017.
