LittleBigPlanet developers spend big on R&D

Though LittleBigPlanet is one of the most profitable Sony-exclusive franchises, developers Media Molecule are apparently not satisfied having just just one IP to rely on, having revealed in their annual stockholder report that $6.3 million was spent on R&D as the company looks to score another hit.

The company has made it clear that LittleBigPlanet has just about run its course, which makes sense, given that the game's sandbox style of gameplay doesn't lend itself well to sequels, many gamers perfectly content sifting through the constant stream of new user-generated content. Media Molecule mentions that they've also invested money in a variety of new technologies, including “leading edge physics and dynamics, rapid world creation from laser data, innovative routes to market via web based interfaces, 3D stereo-optics for advanced simulation, and use of ‘hi-def’ data capture and processing techniques”. What they're planning with all this fancy new hardware, we're not sure, though we're hoping it'll be as revolutionary as LBP!
