Joey Ansah, the writer and director of the Street Fighter: Legacy live-action short film, has launched a Kickstarter for his latest project. He is trying to get funding for a live-action series based on the popular video game franchise, titled Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist. Originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con last year, Ansah is asking for £625,000 (about $950,000) to get Assassin's Fist into production for a winter release.
Ansah, who's appeared in films like The Bourne Ultimatum and Snow White and the Huntsman, wrote on the Kickstarter that while Capcom isn't investing in the project, Capcom has given the team their blessings.
"Street Fighter: Legacy was always just a proof of concept, a taster of what Street Fighter, in live action, could and should be," wrote Ansah. "To prove Capcom and the fanbase that it was possible to do a faithful rendition of Street Fighter, its characters, martial arts styles, special moves and music. A means to an end to do something bigger… Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist."
Some of the production budget has already been raised, as the series has been in production for almost three years. If funding cannot be raised through Kickstarter, the team is at risk of losing all of the funding it has already received from unnamed investors. That would delay production until next year.
