Logan is arguably one of the best superhero movies ever made. It received critical acclaim for its gritty, heart-wrenching story and brutal performances, even when it dropped at the start of 2017, it was on the tip of many peoples’ tongues for Oscar buzz.
Now that the Oscar nominations are out, Logan has received a major honor: A nomination in the Adapted Screenplay category. Next to The Dark Knight and The Incredibles, this is the third superhero movie to ever be nominated for an award outside of technical categories such as visual effects, sound, and whatnot. The Dark Knight’s only non-technical award was for Best Supporting Actor thanks to Heath Ledger’s brilliant portrayal of The Joker, the actor won the Oscar and his family accepted the award on his behalf due to the fact he passed away before the film released. The Incredibles was nominated for Best Original Screenplay and won Best Animated Feature.
Logan is the only superhero film to ever get nominated in the Best Adapted Screenplay category and is going up against some of the best movies of the year. The other contenders are Call Me By Your Name, The Disaster Artist, Mudbound, and Molly’s Game. Call Me By Your Name is nominated for Best Picture so it’ll be interesting to see if Logan can beat it or any of the other films but it’s a massive achievement that writer and director James Mangold managed to accomplish breaking into this category alone.
Superhero fans were hoping to see Wonder Woman also get the attention of the Academy in that same category or at least in the technical categories but it was unable to garner any nominations at all leading to some upset on social media this morning. Some were even upset that Logan didn’t get nominated for more categories! What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
Logan is out now on Blu-ray and can be streamed through HBO as well. The Oscars will air on Sunday, March 4th on ABC.
