Lucasfilm Games revived by Disney for future Star Wars games

Disney has revived the Lucasfilm Games brand after being dormant for decades. The branding will now encompass all Star Wars games under one banner. It should be made very clear, though: Lucasfilm Games is not a developer. A blog post notes that future games will continue to be “developed in collaboration with the finest studios across the industry.”

“Lucasfilm’s legacy in gaming stretches back decades. And with Lucasfilm and the galaxy far, far away entering a new and unprecedented phase of creativity, so will the world of Lucasfilm Games — developed in collaboration with the finest studios across the industry,” reads the blog post.

Lucasfilm Games eventually evolved into LucasArts before being shut down in 2013 after Disney acquired them. This led to the cancelation of games like Star Wars 1313 which was a big blow for fans. EA went on to quickly acquire the license and have made 4 games in about 8 years. It’s unclear if Disney will renew this deal with EA when it expires in 2023 but it seems they may offer it to others by creating a larger banner for Star Wars games.

We wrote about the current state of Star Wars games earlier today before this news broke, noting how EA and Disney need to take more risks with the IP. The first Star Wars game under the Lucasfilm Games banner will be Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. The game will follow episodes 1 – 9 and will be on all current platforms.
