Luke Skywalker won’t be much of a friend to Rey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is probably the most anticipated movie of 2017. After the literal cliffhanger at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens which saw a brief and silent look at Luke Skywalker about 30 years after the end of Return of the Jedi, fans have been dying for more information regarding the sequel. Details have been super scarce, not even the trailer gives much away and everyone who has stepped foot on set is very tight lipped.

Luckily, Entertainment Weekly got an extensive look at the film and are spilling their guts on some key details while still dancing around major spoilers. Along with some new photos, EW learned about how big of a role Supreme Leader Snoke plays in The Last Jedi after his fairly brief holographic cameo-like appearance in TFA, what the hell is going on with Luke Skywalker, and some key locations, creatures, and characters we'll be seeing in the film come December.

On the subject of Luke Skywalker, many have been wondering why he has exiled himself to a remote island and seemingly attempted to leave the ways of the Force behind. Many believe that the former Jedi Knight attempted to start a Jedi Academy after the fall of the Empire and that things went awry with a young pupil known as Ben Solo or Kylo Ren. Some also theorize that Kylo Ren was influenced by Supreme Leader Snoke somehow and that Snoke was going to take hold of a young Rey, leading to Luke taking her and dropping her off on the desert planet of Jaku with only a somewhat abusive shopkeeper to look after her.

Rey had a lot of acceptance in The Force Awakens via Finn, Han Solo, the Resistance, and General Leia but in The Last Jedi, she will face rejection from Luke.

“Regardless of everything else, she’s been welcomed. No one ever really turns away from her,” said Daisy Ridley speaking to EW.

After Rey actually talks to Luke, she's sort of dumbfounded and confused. This hero isn't what he used to be and it certainly isn't what Luke experienced when he crossed paths with Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope.

“She’s so hopeful to everything,” Ridley says. “And obviously there’s a hint of, ‘What the hell?’”

Ridley not only goes in search of answers and potentially training but also to get Luke Skywalker to help take down The First Order, the phoenix that has risen from the ashes of the Empire. Sadly, it's not going to be as easy as just handing him his lightsaber and inviting him aboard the Millennium Falcon.

“I don’t think one girl, who he doesn’t know, turning up with a lightsaber is gonna make him go, ‘Oh, s—, yeah, of course I’ll get back into the action,’” Ridley says.

“But does he not know her?” said Star Wars veteran Mark Hamill, continuing to tease fans and give their theories more weight.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters on December 15th, 2017.
