Mad Max creator unveils open-world shooter Generation Zero

Swedish games developer Avalanche Studios has revealed their new project Generation Zero. An open-world first-person shooter set in a machine infested 1980’s Sweden. You will be able to play the game either solo or with up to three friends in Co-Op. Check out the trailer!

In the short trailer, Avalanche made sure to emphasize the 80s setting with players having punk hairstyles, clothing and even Walkmans. Underlined by a synth background track, the trailer makes sure to set the tone:

Explore a vast open world, rendered with the award-winning Apex engine, featuring a full day/night cycle with unpredictable weather, complex AI behavior, simulated ballistics, highly realistic acoustics and a dynamic 1980’s soundtrack.

But not only in style does Generation Zero want to shine. In their announcement release, the developer outlines an interesting take on a persistent world that could feel much more real:

All enemies are persistently simulated in the world, and roam the landscape with intent and purpose. By tactically combining weapons, skills and equipment, you’ll be able to lure, cripple, and destroy your enemies. If you manage to destroy a specific enemy component, be it armor, weapons or sensory equipment, the damage is permanent. Enemies will bear those scars until you face them again, whether that is minutes, hours or weeks later.

It’s also very welcoming that we get an early first look at actual in-game footage and not a CG trailer. Using Avalanche’s own Apex Open World Engine, even at this early stage, Generation Zero is sporting nice visuals. But what else would we expect from the studio that brought us beautiful games like Just Cause 3 and Mad Max.

Avalanche Studios has in fact become sort of a specialist for over-the-top open-world action games. Whether it is the Just Cause franchise or Mad Max, subtlety in mayhem is not what we look out for.

Generation Zero is set to release sometime in 2019.
