In a move that is sure to create controversy, the popular modding resource website Nexus Mods has posted a statement that they will not allow any mods that include political content with regards to the USA.
The websites’ owner Robin Scott a.k.a. Dark0ne explained the decision with a wave of subpar content that has been submitted recently which takes the US election and its popular figureheads as the focal point.
Recently we have seen a spate of provocative and troll mods being uploaded based around current sociopolitical issues in the United States. As we get closer to the US election in November we expect this trend to increase as it did this time 4 years ago. – Nexus Mods
These so-called “troll mods” have apparently caused quite the stir among the Nexus Mods community with heated arguments and aggressive behavior manifesting itself on the website’s discussion boards.
Nexus Mods does not want to be a place where politics are the major topic of engagement, nor does the site’s owner see any indication that civil talks are going to take place. In fact, he cites a loud minority who went overboard in their discussions, even resorting to accusations.
Hey, it’s the internet. And in the age of Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit, did anyone really expect to see something else happening? It’s a sad state of affairs in general how online discourse is happening, and as such, it is understandable that Nexus Mods does not want to spiral out into a cesspool.
Furthermore, the ban on US political mods will only last until the election is over and the new President of the United States is inaugurated. So, sometime early next year. This way, the decision is rather meant to deter the website to deteriorate with low-effort mods. Rest assured that after the election you’ll be able to find your US President in Skyrim mods.
