Yesterday, we got our first look at Star Wars: The Last Jedi via a trailer. While it doesn’t reveal a ton, we hear and see Luke Skywalker but he doesn’t seem to be the same character we once knew. At the end of the trailer he reveals that he believes the Jedi must “end”. Clearly, he’s had a pretty dark couple years since Return of the Jedi but we aren’t exactly sure what happened.
In an interview with Fandango, Mark Hamill revealed some stuff about what exactly is happening with Luke.
“Well he’s a completely different person,” he said. “He had an arc [in the original trilogy], and I think Carrie and Harrison admitted their characters were pretty much the same throughout, but Luke was always changing. Now we have this 30-year gap between the films, so a lot of if is conjecture. It’s not specifically my story – Rey is now the protagonist.”
“I think you’ll find some things that’ll surprise you,” he said. “They certainly surprised me. I said to Rian, I think I fundamentally disagree with everything you’ve decided for me. Now having said that, I have to accept it, get my mind around it and do my best to realize your vision. Once I got into it, a lot of my fears went away.”
In addition to that, Daisy Ridley (who plays Rey) hinted on The Last Jedi panel that Luke won’t be what we expect.
“We go deeper into Rey’s story [in The Last Jedi],” Ridley said, “and what is very apparent from where we left off in The Force Awakens and begin in The Last Jedi, is that Rey has a certain expectation of Luke. And as a lot of people know, it’s difficult when you meet your heroes because they might not be what you expect.”
This could mean a variety of things. Luke could go the way of Yoda in Empire Strikes Back where he acts like a total lunatic or he could be mean and scary after seeing a ton of terrible things over the years.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi releases in theaters on December 15th, 2017.
