Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War is about to make production history

When you follow a blockbuster like Avengers: Age of Ultron, the only thing you can do is go bigger. To that end, Marvel has announced plans to film Avengers: Infinity War — Parts 1 & 2 in their entirety using IMAX and ARRI's revolutionary 2D digital camera — "a joint customized digital version of ARRI's new large format Alexa 65."

"The two-part Avengers saga marks the first time a Hollywood feature film will have been shot completely using IMAX cameras and will feature IMAX's exclusive aspect ratio, providing moviegoers a uniquely immersive experience," Marvel said in a statement.

While Avengers: Infinity War will be the first Hollywood film to shoot entirely using these cameras, Marvel's upcoming Captain America: Civil War will actually use the IMAX/ARRI 2D digital camera for select action sequences.

On the decision to film entirely with this technology, Infinity War directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, who are taking over Marvel's billion-dollar franchise from Joss Whedon, said:

"The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring 10 years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax. We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/Arri Digital camera."

Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 will release in IMAX theatres on May 4, 2018, with its follow-up Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 set for release on May 3, 2019. However, fans will get a first glimpse at how this new camera might look when Captain America: Civil War releases in theaters on May 6, 2016.
