Marvel’s Avengers dev addresses Spider-Man PlayStation controversy

Marvel’s Avengers made big waves this week when it was revealed Spider-Man would be coming to the game… as a PlayStation exclusive. Fans were notably upset that Marvel’s most iconic character wouldn’t be available to everyone and it seems that it will be that way for the foreseeable future.

Crystal Dynamics head Scot Amos commented on the decision to make Spider-Man exclusive and why it had to be that way.

“So the beauty of Spider-Man, and what Spider-Man represents as a character, and as a world is… Again, it comes back to the relationship with PlayStation and Marvel,” Amos said. “We happened to be… once you can execute and deliver, when it comes down to choices of where and what Spider-Man can be, that’s a relationship question that PlayStation absolutely has the rights to, that as you guys know, with Sony’s ownership there, and Marvel with Sony saying, ‘Hey, this is something we can do. This is something we can do on this platform.'”

As for the outcry, Amos believes fans are focusing far too much on negatives rather than the fact that there will be tons of content for everyone.

“But I really do think people will look at this and say, ‘Yeah, okay, we get that, we can understand the business behind that’, but in general, we’re making this game for everybody,” Amos said. “We want this to be the place you get to play those superhero fantasies out with your Avengers team, that continue growing with new characters, characters you ain’t even guessed at yet, that are going to come to this roster down the road, and new regions as well. So I am very excited for what the future holds for everybody on all platforms.”

On another note, IGN was able to confirm this is very much a new version of Spider-Man and not a continuation of the Insomniac Games version.

“It’s going to be our version of Spider-Man, inspired by our world and integrated into our story,” said Creative Director Shaun Escayg.

Marvel’s Avengers is out next month on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. It’ll also launch on next-gen consoles at a later date. Spider-Man will make his appearance on PlayStation consoles in early 2021.
