Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered gets new look on PS5

Earlier this month, Sony announced that Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be coming to PS5 at launch this November. The spin-off will also launch alongside a remaster of Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Details have been pretty vague about what this remaster will do but now we have details, footage, and more. The biggest difference is that Peter Parker’s model has changed. They have recast the face model for the character and it’s a pretty big leap. Insomniac addressed the change in a blog post.

“We loved working with John Bubniak on the original game; however, to get a better match to Peter Parker/Spider-Man actor Yuri Lowenthal’s facial capture, we have cast Ben Jordan to be the face model for Peter Parker on the PS5 console. He looks incredible in-game, and Yuri’s moving performances take on a new life,” said James Stevenson from Insomniac.

People on social media have drawn comparisons to Tom Holland for the new model, leading to some controversy. Insomniac Games creative director Bryan Intihar responded to the backlash.

“Today’s news about the new Peter Parker face model has surprised some of you, and we at Insomniac totally understand your reaction. Heck, it even took me awhile to get used to Peter’s new look. But as we discussed the franchise’s future and moving to the PS5, it quickly became apparent that delivering even more believable-looking characters made finding a better facial match for actor Yuri Lowenthal — who we all love as Peter — a necessity.

“We care as much about this character as your attachment to him, so please know we didn’t make this decision/change lightly. As we did throughout the development of Marvel’s Spider-Man, we’ll continue to read your comments, listen, and always be looking for ways to improve every facet of the game. At the same time, I hope you can trust us that this decision is what we feel is best for the future of the franchise and our upcoming goals for this beloved Marvel character.”

Peter Parker is the only character to undergo a drastic change but everyone else will be enhanced. Characters will now have higher-fidelity skin and eyes as well as individually-rendered hair.

Insomniac has also added ray-tracing, real reflections, and new weather. You can get a look at Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered running in 60 FPS below.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered will also take advantage of the new PS5 controller: the DualSense. Insomniac will be using the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, likely so you can feel the tension of Spidey’s webs. You’ll also gain some new photo mode features and 3 new suits, including The Amazing Spider-Man movie suit.
